The Academy will train recruits in the most realistic, intense, and current defensive tactics (DTs) available. As part of their duty, police officers must apprehend suspects, some of which may be violent. Furthermore, police officers are expected to protect themselves and others from harm. For these reasons, a major emphasis is placed on DTs during the Academy. Some areas of focus will be handcuffing, weaponless defense, baton, and O.C. spray. DTs are physically demanding and will be incorporated throughout the Academy with physical fitness. Recruits will constantly engage in dynamic contact drills such as arrest and control scenarios, obstacle courses, simunitions drills, and the use of force theory and application.
