Any Candidates want to talk?
Posted Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 9:05 PM

Is there anyone in the current hiring process that would like to discuss anything? I have 8 years military experience if anyone has questions about drill and ceremony which you will need probably first day of the academy. How does everyone feel they are doing and do you feel comfortable about being in the next academy? I feel like I have done great so far and will be there. Just trying to get to know some people I will be spending a lot of time with in the near future.

That's what I heard as well. Did you rank in the top 23 at all?

Yes I ranked #2. I prepared for months for these tests. I tested in 2006 and didn't even pass the written so I'm glad I made it this far.

Citizencav,

We appreciate you taking the time to extend an offer of help to other candidates. Perhaps you can share some general advice that you feel would be beneficial to other candidates.

Yes sir thank you, I would love to help. My name is Charles Brotherson. I have 8 years military experience and I know that the academy is a para military environment. If any there is anyone without a military backround fear not, I can help. If anyone wants to contact me to get further details email me at cab623@gmail.com. I would suggest to everyone to learn facing movements and drill and ceremony. You can google if you want to, im sure you can find it. Learn(Right and Left face) (going to Attention) (Parade Rest) and learn how to (march). There are specific places you need to put you hands and arms during these movements. I am not sure about saluting but, it couldn't hurt to learn how. And learn how to perform an (About Face). I would also suggest you learn how to use black shoe shine for your duty belt and gear along with your shoes and or boots. Also get ready to use Brasso which shines metal IE; Bullets, badges, name plates and so on. If you havn't already read and I don't know why you wouldn't have, the academy is Physical and Mental. Prepare yourself to be YELLED AT! Yes you will be yelled at, and if you can't handle being talked to in a diffrent way mommy and daddy talk to you, I wouldn't even show up. RUN RUN RUN, run up hill downhill, sprint, all different kinds of agility and strength training. I do not recommend waiting until the last minute. If you are serious about a career in law enforcment, you are probably already training. Also be prepared for long hours in the class room. Note taking and LOTS of good learning. you should learn and Know the 400 CODES AND ACADEMY DEFINITIONS before the first day of the academy. It will save you from being yelled at more if you don't know them AND, it can ease your mind so you can focus on other studies. Also if you want to really get ahead It wouldn't hurt to start looking at the U.S. Constitution and NRS because this is what you will be following and enforcing as a Police Officer.

RECAP:
Drill and Ceremony and facing movements
Physical Training
Learn and Know 400 codes and Academy Definitions
Know how to shine your gear and be inspection ready

Any questions or if you want help I am currently working part time and have plenty of extra time to help you out and even study with you. Good luck to everyone and see you soon.

Respectfully

Charles Brotherson

There's a decent chance you'll be in the academy with the failure rate in backgrounds. I wish I could say that. I've been preparing for years, and now that I was finally old enough to test, I had a bad day on the PT test and failed the sit-ups. I would love to be in the academy, but my chance is gone for a couple years. Everyone who got in before the big slow down is lucky. They were able to test every month and get into academies 6 months later. We all long for those days back.

Good luck to everyone in the upcoming academy.

If yu want things to study, start with the 400 codes. From there, start learning about the department (chain of command, organization, history, etc.). You can find most of that info under the "About Us" section of www.LVMPD.com. It would also be good to memorize the common NRS statutes (i.e. Burglary, Robbery, Murder, etc.)

Other than that, start running and working out as much as you can. I'm sure you've seen that a lot, but listen and do it. Get your diet in order, too. If you go into the academy in poor PT condition, or with a bad diet, you'll suffer big time.
