Metro for women?
Posted Monday, March 2, 2009 at 7:49 PM

I've carefully studied the women's recruiting section of this site, as well as listened to the podcasts and the interviews with female officers at Metro. I still can't help but be concerned, however, about how the perception of female officers would impact me, if I were hired. Being able to do 19 push-ups is one thing (and I'm worried about that too) but being on your own in a black and white is another.

I'm wondering if any female Metro officers can talk about their experiences on the beat, and how they overcame issues about size, strength and perceptions of female officers...

If I said I wasn't more than a little scared, I'd be lying. I just hope admitting that fear doesn't disqualify women who are thinking about trying for Metro from consideration.

ARG, I am not passing judgement or anything like that but just from the question above I gather that you may not have the correct temperment to go very far in this career field.
You need to be MUCH more demonstrative and a whole lot of the "small person syndrome" attitude, if you know what I mean.
Also, the push-up test is the same for male and female. You are required to do 24 -CORRECT- pushups with no time limit to do them. This is the bare minumum to get to the academy.
Good luck, Troll42

I appreciate your reply, Troll. I realized I got the number of push ups incorrect a few minutes after I wrote the post... I've been told that female officers at Metro sometimes have to work twice as hard to prove themselves in a very male-dominated field. And believe me - I've got nothing wrong with working hard. I was really just asking any female officers reading the message board if they could share some of their own thoughts and experiences. I think we can both agree that - fair or not - a "bad guy" might look at a small woman like myself a bit differently than a large man. So when I say "perception of female officers" that's what I'm talking about.

I think that its fair for a female with no hands-on law enforcement experience to be somewhat scared of the idea -- actually, I'd be more concerned if a prospective officer wasn't scared. Asking questions, and being honest going into the process, means you take it seriously.

I take this seriously.

These positings don't really belong in this section of the Board but I'm going to address this issue since it is something I hear a lot.

There are thousands of female police officers across America protecting and serving the communities in which they live. They are just as successful as men on the street. Trust me when I tell you this isn't a gender issue. I've seen plenty of male officers get in fights that their female counterparts, in similiar circumstances, seldom do. Your physicality is only part of the picture. It is your professionalism, bearing, communications skills, and your self-confidence that are more critical regardless of gender of physical size. We will teach you the skills and tactics you need to survive. Your proficiency with those skills, combined with the traits I mentioned above, as well as keeping yourself physically fit will minimize your risks on the street. You must always remember, however, that this is a dangerous job. You can get hurt or killed. The stress of that is something you will have to deal with during your career. Take this journey one step at a time. Worry more about your ability to learn and perform the job and less about entering a "male dominated" world.

Thank you for the thorough answer, Academy SGT. I'm a work in progress, but I'm working hard.

If you want it bad enough you'll be here, make it through the program and be a great cop. Good luck.
