Developing Proper pacing
Posted Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 9:12 PM

I am trying to improve on my distance running in my current training. I am finding it very difficult to pace myself. I do not use a walkman or other distraction because I want to train in a manner that will promote success when I start the Academy.

My father is ex-navy and suggested using a cadence. How do you determine pacing during the Academy runs? Are there any particular cadences that you use? I am trying to develop a running style where I don't overdue it and am forced to slow down. I appreciate any advice you can give me to improve my endurance.

Our best advice is to simply run. Start out running two miles for a few weeks. You are bound to improve just by running and sticking to it. Then increase your distance by .2 miles each week. That is how you will do it in the academy.

Running is one of those things that is mental for most people. Overcoming that mental block is always tough, but sticking to a program is the best way to do it. Knowing you are training for something (the academy) always helps because you have set a goal for yourself. Be positive and your pacing will improve over time.

No. You will start with 1.5 mile runs and quickly move up to 3. Generally, our max distance is 5 miles on a single run. However, you run everywhere in the Academy and a total day's running could be longer when factoring disciplinary running. Be in shape. I tell candidates not to judge the level of physical fitness required at the Academy by what you had to accomplish on the hiring PT test. THERE IS NO COMPARISON. If you want a benchmark follow this guidance. If you can run 4 miles at an 8.5 pace, both on level surface and up hills, without stopping or being extremely winded, you are at the ENTRY level required.

Running shoes. Not cross trainers or anything like that. Running shoes. Nothing extremely colorful. Stick with plain white or black. White tends to get dirty so it would be best to stick with black or else you'll find yourself cleaning your running shoes as well as polishing your boots.
