Regarding Duty Handgun
Posted Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Sir,
I have read that we will have Firearm Selection Training prior to being aloud to carry a hand gun. My question is how far in advance the Firearm Selection Training is to actual Firearm, and marksmanship training etc...I am familiar with guns, though have no formal training. I believe I have it narrowed down, after much research to the gun I would like use that does meet the firearm policy. Would you recommend waiting for the Selection Training or being ready with my gun prior?
Thank you

You will have at least a month to purchase the handgun prior to qualification. You are not allowed to to use (practice) any firearm while in the academy other than during training at our range. You can certainly purchase the handgun you want prior to the academy but, unless you have firearms experience, you may regret your decision. We have seen plenty of recruits who bring handguns to the academy that are not best suited for them. About 30% of every academy class has difficulity qualifying and has to retest. Some of these are due poor handgun selection/suitability. If you do purchase a gun prior to the academy, ensure that it complies with the policy outlines in your inprocessing packet.
