Physical fitness will play a huge role in your career as a Police or Corrections Officer. Not only because of health reasons, but also because of the role fitness plays in the day to day job related tasks you will be asked to perform. We feel there are several goals you should have as you embark on your journey to the academy and beyond.

The first goal will be to successfully pass the LVMPD New Hire Physical Fitness Test. Depending on whether you are testing for Police Recruit or Corrections Recruit will determine which test you will be taking.

POLICE RECRUIT TEST

  • Jamar Grip Strength – 80 pounds of pressure with either hand.
  • Bend, Twist, & Touch – 15 cycles in 20 seconds.
  • 100 Yard Dash – Completed start to finish in 19 seconds or less.
  • Push Ups – 24 correct repetitions with no time limit.
  • Sit Ups – 32 correct repetitions in 1 minute.
  • 1 Mile Run – Completed start to finish in 10 minutes 49 seconds or less.

CORRECTIONS RECRUIT TEST

  • Vertical Jump – minimum of a 14 inch jump.
  • Push Up – 18 correct repetitions with no time limit.
  • Sit Up – 15 correct repetitions in 1 minute
  • 300 Meter Dash – Completed start to finish in 77 seconds or less.
  • 1.5 Mile Run – Completed start to finish in 17 minutes 17 seconds or less.

The standards for these two tests are in no way indicative of what will be expected of you in the Police or Corrections Academy physically. They are merely a first step which helps us determine if you are ready to proceed in the process and begin preparing physically for your training.

Even though these standards are considered to be minimal, the LVMPD Recruitment Team encounters numerous candidates who are unable to successfully pass the test. If you have not been engaging in physical activity (weight lifting, running, etc.), these tests may prove difficult for you. We strongly recommend you take advantage of the following provided resources before you consider testing for the LVMPD.

PHYSICAL FITNESS RESOURCES

  1. Physical Training Preparation Seminars – Check the “Seminars and Events” section of the home page and you will find a schedule which typically runs on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. LVMPD Fitness Trainers will put you through voluntary workouts including Cardiovascular Training, Speed and Agility Training, Flexibility, Strength Training, and more. The sessions are free and you can attend them as much and as often as you like. You will have to sign a waiver of liability upon arrival to each session.

  2. 90 Day Physical Fitness Program – If you are from out of town or cannot make the PT Prep Seminars, than we recommend you begin following our 90 day program. This program is designed to guide you through your training for the New Hire PT Test or the academy. Your recruiter can answer questions for you over the phone is you need guidance.

The LVMPD Recruitment Team consistently is asked what many of the exercises look like which are referred to in the 90 Day PT Program. For this reason, we have produced the following videos to assist you in performing these exercises correctly. These are some of the same routines you will complete daily in the police and corrections academys. The exercises depicted are for demonstration purposes only and do not offer specific instructions. If you would like hands on instruction, please contact your recruiter or attend one of our scheduled PT Prep Seminars.
