Employment Stages
The Office of Human Resources (OHR), the Backgrounds Section, and the Organizational Development Bureau (ODB), which are a part of the Professional Standards Division, have designed a systems approach to attracting, selecting, hiring, and training. Hiring qualified candidates can only be accomplished if these applicants are encouraged to work for the LVMPD. The effort to recruit a qualified workforce is the responsibility of every LVMPD employee. Additionally, the LVMPD calls upon community leaders, agencies, and interest groups to support this employment effort.
The various department sections that specialize in different aspects of the recruiting, selecting, hiring, and training processes are as follows:
Recruiting - With the assistance of the community, the LVMPD encourages applicants to prepare for a career in law enforcement. Recruiters hold symposiums, visit special interest groups, conduct employment seminars, host fitness preparation sessions, and meet one-on-one with potential applicants. Men and women interested in law enforcement are encouraged to visit with recruiters who will explain their career options and answer questions. For those not interested in becoming an officer, there are a variety of civilian positions, as well. Job descriptions and minimum qualifications are also listed on this website for more information.
Selection and Classification Section - This section handles a variety of selection and classification-related tasks including conducting job analyses, developing new classifications, developing and administering testing processes, posting job announcements, screening applications, and creating eligibility lists for hire, transfer, and promotional applicants. This Section also offers career counseling to current LVMPD members.
Personnel Management Team - This team handles the employment processing and onboarding of new employees, and tracking of personnel movement throughout the LVMPD.
Backgrounds Section - This section conducts life history investigations and polygraphs on candidates who have completed the selection process and been placed on an eligibility list as positions are authorized to be filled.
Organizational Development Bureau - This bureau administers the Police Recruit Academies, while the Detention Services Division Training Section administers the Corrections Recruit Academies. Both are also responsible for in-service training provided to current employees on various and relevant topics.
